Groceries Oy

Went grocery shopping tonight - which I've been avoiding like the plague.  I've known for a few weeks that the inevitable had to be faced; I allowed myself to ignore the facts with one excuse after the next, but they've all run their course, and graduation last week put the period on the last runon sentence.

I've got nothing but time to make the right choices, which starts with what I eat.  Because I don't have groceries, I allow myself to eat out all the time -- who wants to go to the store?

I'm getting behind myself. The point is I finally got over it and went tonight, and couldn't believe that Walmart wanted $180 of my dollars to give me lettuce and nuts and berries and yogurts and teeny tiny calories.  I just have to get used to this, but boy I don't like it.

I think part of the reason I've got so much sticker shock is that I'm used to seeing food in one meal pricepoints.  If I'm spending less than $4 in a drive thru I'm doing great, $6 or $7 is okay for a splurge on lunch, $15 is tops for a reasonable meal out with the girls, $20+ and we're talking graduations and birthdays.

None of those figures are $180.  Now the logical part of my brain realizes that $5 (we'll average) a meal, two meals a day, five days a week is $200 a month all on its own, and doesn't account for weekend splurges.  Even if I don't stick to the groceries I just bought, and account for the cost of shakeology (we'll round again and say $100/30 days), I bet I'll either break even or pull ahead.

And even if I don't, it's cheaper than bypass.

That should become my grocery shopping mantra.

It's Cheaper Than Bypass.

  1. That is a great mantra!!! IT really is cheaper than bypass and it is better for your body. Shakeology is only $3 a serving for a coach (which you now are a coach!!). PS: Almonds and other nuts are expensive and will last you awhile!

  2. I am going to start saying that too , to myself, when I start to complain about the cost of healthy food!
